Words and Terms
Abdication: to give up rights to the throne
Authoritarianism: a system enforcing strict obedience to authority
Autocratic: complete authority answering only to God
Bolsheviks:the radical socialist party led by Lenin who were to become the Communist Party in 1918
Bourgeosie: Marxist term for the exploiting capitalist middle class
Capitalism: an economic system based on private ownership of capital (wealth and resources)
Communism: a form of socialism that abolishes private ownership and a political theory favoring collectivism in a classless society - wealth is owned by everybody
Emancipation: freeing someone from the control of another
Kulak: a wealthy peasant
Marxism: the socialist political ideology which split into the moderate Mensheviks and the radical Bolsheviks
Mensheviks: a political party believing in a more gradual and moderate form of socialism
Politburo: the Political Bureau of the Central Commitee
Proletariat: the Marxist term for the revolutionary working class (mostly from urban centres)
Revolution:a fundamental change in power or organizational structures that takes place in a relatively short period of time
Socialism: a political theory advocating state ownership of industry or an economic system based on state ownership of capital
Soviet: the elected workers council
