List of words and terms
Absolutist: Having total power
Annex: To take over territory (eg Israel's annexation of Jeruslalem in 1967)
Anti-Semitism: Behaviour and beliefs hostile to Jews
Assimilation: To be absorbed into another culture or nation (eg Jews in to Europe)
Attrition: Gradual wearing down of opposition
Authoritarian: Demanding obedience to authority, as in a dictatorship
Capital: Money for investment
Coalition: A group working together
Communal: Relating to a community, for example, communal conflict between Jews and Arabs in Palestine
Coup: Overthrow of a government
Deicide: Killing of God or Jesus for which Jews were blamed
Diaspora: A community or people dispersed or exiled from their homes
Discrimination: One side favoured over the other on racial, religious or political grounds
Embargo: A ban on trade or a single product
Emigrant: A person who leaves their country to live elsewhere
Fedayeen: A Muslim fanatic
Fundamentalist: A person who believes in strict observance of their religion and literal interpretation of religious writings
Haganah: A Jewish defense force established in Palestine in the 1930s
Hezbollah: A Muslim fundamentalist group
Immigrant: A person who moves into a country to live there
Infidel: An unbeliever

Intifada: The Palestinian uprising against the Israelis
Jihad: Arabic word meaning holy war or struggle; a religious obligation on the part of Muslims to oppose unbelievers
Kibbutz: Jewish pioneering settlement; based on principles of shared ownership and strict equality of the sexes
Mandate: A territory governed by another on behalf of the international community
Mediate: Attempt to bring an agreement between parties
Pogrom: Massacre of a class or race
Refugee: Homeless person seeking refuge in a foreign country (eg Jews fleeing the aftermath of the Holocaust or Palestinians in Lebanon, Syria, Gaza)
Secular: Non religious
Terrorist: One who uses force against innocent civilians to pressure them into accepting a particular point of view
Zionism: The movement to create an exclusively Jewish homeland in Palestine
